Why is a Utah Lawyer Referral Consultant Bond Required?

The Utah Division of Consumer Protection sets the registration requirements for lawyer referral consultants, including:

  • Application and fees
  • Criminal background checks
  • Contract requirements

These licensing requirements set the standard for how a consultant should run their business and interact with their clients.

And despite these requirements, every year there are a handful of consultants to abuse their power and harm their clients for financial gain.

Examples of these harmful and fraudulent acts include:

  • Stealing fees from a client
  • Charging excessive fees or false fees
  • Not providing lawyer referral services
  • Providing harmful and illegal "legal" advice
  • Misrepresenting themselves or an attorney

The Utah lawyer referral consultant surety bond is the primary way the Division holds consultants accountable to the promises and actions they perform for their clients.

If a client is purposefully harmed by a consultant through these actions or similar actions, they can make a claim against the consultant's surety bond for financial compensation.

However the level of compensation only extends to the amount of the bond.

What Is The Utah Lawyer Referral Consultant Bond Amount?

The Division makes it easy by requiring a $50,000 bond for all lawyer referral consultants.

Even though each surety looks at similar factors, how they assess their risk is unique to them. This means the rate one surety's quotes will be different from another.
